What to look for in an online dating site:
- Membership Size - Bigger is better although don’t discount the smaller sites.
- Specific Search - Ability to search by local city or even better your zip code.
- Extra features - Chat rooms, Instant Messengers (IMs), video chat, etc.
- Fees - As long as the prices are not way above average, it should not matter. eHarmony has one of the most expensive fee structures which is why we do not feature them.
Do a free search to get an idea of how many singles are available in your area. Once you narrow this to 2 or 3 sites, sign up for the free trial or guest memberships. Do searches, try out the features that are available. Once you find 1 or 2 online sites, sign up for a 1-month membership. If you are satisfied the the services, you can sign up for a 3-month (which is what recommend). However, you should only sign up for a 1-month membership until you find 1 or 2 sites that you really like.
Safety Tips
Guys, this applies to you too. Don’t think there are no crazy women out there. There are!!
- The majority of these dating sites allow you to remain anonymous to other users until you feel ready to provide contact information to other users.
- Although the sites take steps to eliminate any suspect members, it is impossible to screen them out completely. Unfortunately, not all members will be honest and truthful in their dealings with other members.
- Never include your personal contact information in your profile, especially telephone numbers, email, home address or your last name.
- Only provide your contact info to another member when you feel comfortable enough to trust the person.
- Set up a separate email account just for online dating usage. This makes it easy to quarantine any unwanted mail
- Ask a lot of questions when communicating and be alert for inconsistencies or requests for money. Make notes if you are suspicious of anything.
- If someone starts harassing you, report the person immediately to the dating service.
- If someone asks you for money, use common sense. NEVER send money to anyone you meet online even if you have met the person.
- Don’t meet anyone that you have not at least spoken to on the phone for at least a few times.
- When you do decide to meet face to face, pick a public place (such as a mall or restaurant) and do not go anywhere that is desolate and dark.
- Take your own transportation for the first few dates.
- Tell a friend where you're going. Let them know when you return from the date.
Nonetheless, online dating is a safer way to meet people than meeting someone in the street or a club.
